Writer Interviews

SIRUM : F1C TMD SWB MKA

Can you tell us a bit about your background?

HELLO MY NAME IS: - SIRUM ! - FORMULA 1 COLLECTIVE THE MOST DEFF - SKINNY WHITE BOYS - MAD KAP ARTISTS - THE IRONLAK TEAM & FAMILY.

How did you choose your tag, any special meaning?

I didn't always write SIRUM , I had many different alias' beforehand. I think it was a matter of spending the time to find the letters I love to paint the most! Somewhere along my path, I came up with SIRUM. The S - R and M I love painting, and the I and the U compliment these feature letters and create balance.

How did you get in to graffiti?

I grew up in the southeast suburbs on the Frankston line where I became interested in graffiti in around 1994-95.  I went to a private school until the end of year 9. I generated my own interest in graffiti as no one else took any real notice to the art form at the time.
It wasn't till the following year that I ended up at ( back then ) Moorabbin Tech where graff was everywhere!

And that was the beginning. At the time I got to meet a lot of other young writers, but most were only into bombing so I started to try pieces on boards in my back yard. Once confident enough, I started to paint a number of local spots along the Frankston line in my old hood, I continued these little missions for a couple of years before I actually started painting with anyone else.

What is it that you love about graffiti that keeps you writing?

STYLE.... I F@#@%N LOVE STYLE.

Tell us about your style and how it has developed over the years.

It's funny, because I have always had the same idea behind my style, slightly technical mixed with funky "FRANKSTON" letter styles, also with a heavy New York influence.
It was over a long period of time that I studied different styles, ideas and concepts before I could properly execute them some many years later.

Who have been your major influences?

STYLE WISE - Mesk, Grater, Jorz, Trance, Puzle, Ocupy and Sumo have been some of the major from my home city of Melbourne. From overseas - SUK crew, Smash, Dare, Bates, Seen, Ces, Askew, Skeme, Dondi... just to name a few.

Friendship wise - ASKEW, PHAT1, VANS, TR-ONE, RESET, HOOKER, PILFER, DETCH, PERSO AND PHIBER and all my very close friends at IRONLAK ( I love you all! ) There are many others too!

Paint brand of choice

What do you think?....   IRONLAK

Cap of choice

NEW YORKER.

What music motivates you to paint?

Rock 'n roll > ACDC, SIMPLE MINDS, INXS, PINK FLOYD .....

Memorable mission moment

I remember going to Sydney the first time with Reset at the beginning of 2000, we hooked up with Skwigs (where are you bro?) and headed into New Town to find a back packers.
Once this was sorted ,we took to two sides of the main drag and started door knocking for walls.

After only a short time Skwigs came running across the road to tell Reset and myself that he had not only hooked up this Dope wall on the side of a cafe, but the guys there were so impressed with our folios that they gave us breakfast and lunch every day. When we had finished the wall a few days later the guys at the cafe even payed us some cashola for our time as they were so impressed with our work! It wasn't much but back then, going interstate for graff for the first time and knowing how hard it is to get a wall space in Sydney we had the most fortunate luck which made for the dopest time!

Any tips you're willing to share to the next generation of writers?

First and foremost, concentrate on your letters and style. Colours, concepts and technique you will pick up over time.

Style is something you can never stop learning....

Anything else to add?

Shout outs to all the TMDEE'S , F1 - CLAN, the Ironlak family and to all who have supported me... YOU ROCK ! Peace out - Sirum
